Essence

Can you like the essence of a thing and not the thing itself? For instance, I love the rich, nutty aroma of coffee–whether it's in bean form or has just been brewed. But I hate the taste of coffee. I also love the smell of hops, the slightly bitter and earthly aroma. But I hate the taste of beer.

And don't even get me started on rain. The sound of a storm pounding on my window is one of the most hypnotic and comforting things, but I really don't like rainy days. So I find myself stuck between dichotomies and wondering if it's possible to like the essence of something without enjoying it in its entirety. I mean, we can like the thought of something, can't we? And if we can like the thought of something, then we can certainly like the smell/taste/look/sound of something separately from the thing itself.
But I digress.
I don't think liking simply the essence of something means that we are incapable of embracing things fully. I think it shows that we are individual, that we are multiplex and that we have particular taste...just maybe not for coffee or beer ;)
