Hungry?

Why is our culture seemingly obsessed with looking at food?

Well, maybe there's something to the cheesy and chocolatey goodness oozing from professionally photographed plates.

Perhaps it is that Food Porn satisfies a deep and ancient hunger for not only having enough food, but an excess of it to indulge in? But that concept isn't ancient. Our ancestors fed themselves off the land and took only what they needed when they needed it. Now we (and this "we" is a privileged group) have so much food literally at our fingertips that we make it fancy and intriguing in order to not grow tired of it.

I am guilty of this as well and am admittedly a regular consumer of Food Gawker's foodgasmic creations. However, I think it's worth it to take a step back and consider what exactly our obsession is with food; especially because a large portion of the world doesn't even get the choice.

The next time we indulge in food--with our eyes or forks--we should be grateful for the opportunity to do so.
